The Green Party of
Essex County New Jersey

“Action is the antidote to despair.”

- Joan Baez

“I shall assume that your silence gives consent.”

             -Plato

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men people do nothing.”
-Edmund Burke
We've all seen Congress inaction (that's one word), despite the hopes we had that a change of leadership would bring positive change to the country, primarily by ending the bloody carnage in Iraq. But Congress continues to demonstrate the lack of differences between the two parties that have dominated the political scene since the American Civil War. It is time for a change from the two-party system that favors those with the fattest wallets, instead of the average citizen.

  • ran candidates for US Congress, NJ Senate and Irvington Town Council

  • were early activists in opposing the war in Iraq

  • actively supported community efforts against over-development and violence

  • held forums on the need for clean energy and about global warming

  • organized local actions including a rally for an oil-free Congress and a bike ride for a healthy planet

  • marched, rallied and successfully lobbied to help get the NJ Global Warming Response Act passed

Become Active in our work to open the electoral system to new voices, while mobilizing all who strive for a just society and a healthy environment. Support our fresh alternative to politics-as-usual by:

It was 93 degrees, but that didn't stop us and several thousands of others from showing their disgust for the war in Iraq

We Stand For:
  • Grassroots Democracy
Greens believe in direct participation by all citizens in the environmental, political and economic decisions that affect their lives.

  • Social Justice and Equal Opportunity
Greens find poverty and injustice unacceptable, and work for a world in which all can fulfill their potential, regardless of race, class, gender, age, citizenship, or sexual preference.

  • Ecological Wisdom
Greens recognize that the Earth sustains all life forms and believe that we must live within the ecological and resource limits of our communities and our planet.

  • Non-Violence
Greens reject violence as a way of resolving disputes. We are against the death penalty and we work to end it forever.

  • Decentralization
Greens believe that centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, environmental destruction, and militarization. We believe that political decentralization is a prerequisite for a substantive participatory democracy.
  • Community-Based Economics and Economic Justice
Greens advocate economic as well as political decentralization. Local communities should encourage economic development that will protect the environment, uphold workers' rights, and enhance our quality of life.

  • Respect for Diversity
Greens believe that the diverse elements of society should be reflected in our organizations and decision-making bodies. We honor the biological diversity of the Earth, and the cultural, sexual and spiritual diversity of its people.

  • Personal and Global Responsibility
Greens are committed to global sustainability and international justice, both through political solidarity and personal lifestyles based on sufficiency and living lightly upon the Earth.

  • Future Focus and Sustainability,
Greens seek to protect natural resources, to safely dispose of the waste we create, and develop a sustainable economy that does not seek continual expansion. Economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies must be responsible to the needs of future generations
